about Carol McCloskey

Originally from Northern Ireland, I have lived in Spain and England where I completed an honours degree in  literature at Oxford (BA Hon Oxon) and then in France in 1990 where I continued my academic work at the Université de Paris 7 with a Masters 2 specialising in literature and psychoanalysis. My background in journalism and language teaching brought me into contact with individuals of all ages and from many different socio-cultural backgrounds. This experience influenced my choice of a humanist school for my three year diploma in counselling, psychotherapy with the Person Centred Approach Institute in France. (francophone branch of PCAI -international, member of the French Federation of Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis) followed by a certification in psychopathology at the Université autonome de Lisbonne.

My clinical training took place at the psycho-social rehabilitation centre at St Marie psychiatric hospital Nice. I am familiar with pre-therapy approaches effective with psychopathology such as autism and dementia. My  long-term experience in workshops with seniors with the municipal social services (communal social activity centre) has afforded me a wide and rich experience of the retired and the elderly. Community is important to me and I work with a local suicide prevention charity. I am experienced in trauma response and crisis intervention.

I consider that the learning process for a therapist is never at an end. To this end my work in personal practice is regularly supervised and I continue to refine my approach by participating in relevant training programmes in France and England.
